Exotisme et altérité Les récits de voyage français en Grèce au dix-neuvième siècle

Antigone Samiou

Resumo

French travelers of the nineteenth century in Greece become gradually sensitive to the foreign and strange reality of the Greeks. The tendency to exotic writing coincides with the pursuit of the local color and confirms the influence of romanticism as much as the growing ethnographic interest among writers of the time. In fact, the intention of most travelers to be distant towards Greeks inhabitants, which reinforces their undisputed cultural shock, does not encourage opening to the “Other”. Moreover, the authentic words of the Greek language express the astonishment and charm of the exoticism of writers who aim to highlight strange and representative elements of otherness. On the other hand, the birth of a new look sometimes introduces a form of reciprocity into the meeting using non-verbal language.
