Eremitismo em Portugal na época Moderna : homens e imagens

José Adriano de Freitas Carvalho

Resumo

Drawing upon the distinction, which is not always strictly observed in documents and literary texts, between «eremita» (hermit) – the solitary who leads a life of a recluse – and «ermitão» – the one who is charged of the maintenance of an hermitage in a more or less lonely place – a short list was drawn of hermits in Portugal, ranging from the second half of the 15th century to the mid-18th century, who did not belong to any religious order. As a tentative approach to the traditions and the renewal of hermitic life during a period of strong enforcement of the
decisions of the Council of Trent, representation of the hermitage and the hermit between 1546 and 1620 in both literature and the fine arts was examined through a number of authors and works which explicitly delt with the subject.
